Methodology

Driving Questions:

How can I use my future career to impact the world around me?

Theme:

I want to use my future career as a Pediatrician to relieve the pain most patients feel when they are in a doctor's office.

Pain in sick children and the feeling of pain that parents feel is inevitable. Healthcare workers attempt to deliver the best care in every way. Fear and pain cause children to deny medical procedures. With understanding how children react in medical environments and how pain receptors can be blocked and turned off, I can reduce the fear and pain they feel by designing techniques like games and activities that will distract them from feeling the pain.

Problem:

Many children are denying their mandatory medical procedures due to anxiety and fear that they will go through something painful. Thus, some children are becoming sicker because they aren't following through with their medical procedures.

Proposal:

Children are constantly growing uncomfortable and feel pain during doctor's visits. As I study how children act and the mechanism of pain, how can I use the Gate Control Theory of Pain to ease the pain children feel?

Solution:

Using the Gate Control Theory of Pain, I can designs methods on how to block pain signals from reaching the brain to block out the feeling of pain. In a brochure, I will list different methods on what doctors can do to distract their patients from thinking about their pain. In addition, I will use the concept of crash carts. Thus, instead of the crash carts containing medications, it will contain different forms of entertainment and activities to allow the neurological gates in the spinal cord to close and block off pain signals from reaching the brain.
